The word wort means plant in Old English. Commonly Known As St. Johns wortSaint Johns wortHypericum (from the scientific name)GoatweedKlamath weedTipton weed People have been using St. Johns wort for centuries. Today, the popular herb is often used to ease the symptoms of depression. Verywell / Jessica Olah Health Benefits St. Johns wort is widely believed to boost mood and provide some relief from depression, but its not exactly clear how it works. Researchers suspect that ingredients in the herb (hypericin and hyperforin) may increase levels of certain brain chemicals, like serotonin. People with depression often have low levels of serotonin and other neurotransmitters.?? One reason people may wish to try the natural remedy for depression (as opposed to antidepressants that can increase serotonin) is that St. Johns wort tends to have fewer side effects than medications.?? The herb is also being explored for the following health concerns: Anxiety Menopause-related symptomsPremenstrual syndrome (PMS)Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)Smoking cessation An oil made from St. Johnâs wort has also been used topically for wound healing and a variety of other skin conditions such as eczema and hemorrhoids. Depression Although the benefit of St. Johns wort is still being explored, research suggests the herb can be more effective than a placebo in alleviating mild-to-moderate depression. A 2015 review published in the Annals of Family Medicine examined whether antidepressants were more effective than a placebo for patients being treated for depression by their primary care doctor.?? The researchers examined 66 previously published studies (with a total of 15,161 participants) and found that both antidepressant medications and St. Johns wort extracts were more effective than a placebo for treating mild to moderate depression. People taking St. Johns wort were also more likely to continue treatment, as the herb was associated with fewer adverse effects compared to tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (NRI), a serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), and noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant agents (NaSSAs). Major Depression The most comprehensive research on St. Johns wort and major depression includes a 2018 report published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.?? Researchers looked at 29 previously published clinical trials (with a total of 5,489 participants) that compared the effects of St. Johns wort to a placebo or standard antidepressant medication for a period of four to 12 weeks. The studys authors found that St. Johns wort extracts may be more effective than a placebo and were as effective as standard antidepressants. Additionally, the herb appeared to have fewer side effects. The authors noted that the studies conducted in German-speaking countries (where St. Johns wort has a long history of use and is often recommended by physicians) reported more positive results than studies conducted in the United States and other countries. Possible Side Effects People taking an oral St. Johnâs wort supplement for a short period of time may experience side effects. These may include: Mild stomach upsetDiarrheaDry mouthHeadacheTirednessDizzinessAnxietyRestlessnessTinglingAllergic skin reactionsSexual or erectile dysfunctionVivid dreamsLiver injuryPsychosis (rare) When used topically, St. Johns wort may cause a skin rash. St. Johnâs wort (both oral or topical) can also increase the sensitivity of your skin and eyes to sunlight. If you have a condition such as lupus or are taking medication that can cause photosensitivity (such as some acne medications), review the risks and benefits of taking St. Johns wort with your doctor or pharmacist. Possible Drug Interactions St. Johns wort can cause serious interactions with commonly used medications because of how it gets broken down by the liver. The herb can interact with medication in different ways. It can make some drugs less effective while making the effect of others stronger.?? The types of medications that may interact with St. Johns Wort include: AntibioticsAntidepressantsOral contraceptivesImmunosuppressantsBlood thinners such as warfarinSedatives and medications used to treat anxietyDrugs used to treat cancer, heart conditions, and HIV/AIDSOver-the-counter medications (for sleep, coughs, and colds) St. Johns wort can also interact with other herbs and supplements. You should avoid taking any nutritional supplement or remedy that can raise serotonin, such as 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), L-tryptophan, or SAMe if you are taking St. Johns wort. Taking St. Johns wort with antidepressants or any substance that raises serotonin can cause serotonin syndrome, a potentially dangerous condition resulting from an excess of serotonin. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include confusion, fever, hallucinations, nausea, loss of muscle coordination, sweating, and shakiness. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking St. Johnâs wort and seek immediate medical attention. Without treatment, the condition can be fatal. Symptoms of Serotonin Syndrome Contraindications There may be certain situations where it would be unsafe for you to take a supplement such as St. Johns wort or you will need an adjusted dose. For example, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, or taking oral contraceptives (birth control pills), its important to talk with your doctor before you start taking St. Johns wort. St. Johns wort may worsen symptoms in people with certain conditions?, including: Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)Bipolar disorder (may bring on mania or increase speed of cycling)Major depressionSchizophrenia (may increase the risk of psychosis)Alzheimers disease Some research has indicated taking certain herbal supplements, including St. Johns wort, may increase your risk of complications if you are put under anesthesia. You should not take St. Johns wort for two weeks before having surgery.?? If you have received an organ transplant, you will need to avoid St. Johns wort as it can interact with the medications given to help prevent transplant rejection. Dosage and Preparation There is not enough scientific data to provide a standard recommended dose of St. Johns wort, though there are doses commonly used by researchers who are investigating the herbs effect on depression. In NIH-funded trials, participants were given a 300mg dose of a specific concentration of St. Johns wort extract three times a day (900mg daily total). The maximum dose given was 1,800mg per day. By the end of the eight-week trial, the average daily dose was 1,300mg per day. The appropriate dose of St. Johns wort for you will depend on several factors including your age, biological sex, and medical history. Its best to work with your doctor, pharmacist, and/or an alternative health practitioner to personalize your dose to ensure effectiveness and safety. St. Johns wort can be found in several different preparations depending on how it will be used. There are dry, oil, and liquid preparations, including tinctures, capsules, and elixirs.?? Each preparation of St. Johns wort will have different potencies. The strength may also vary from one supplement brand to another. If you are taking St. Johns wort for depression, you may find taking a daily capsule more effective than using a topical treatment (which may be better suited to treating muscle pain, for instance). To help maintain its effectiveness, all preparations of the herb should be kept in a cool, dry, place. Active ingredients in St. Johns wort may be affected by light, which is why the supplements are often packaged in a dark-colored container. Make sure to store the bottle or package out of direct sunlight. St. Johns wort products need to be stored safely, just like any other medication. Unlike prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements dont always come in child-proof containers. What to Look For St. Johns wort is widely available in pharmacies, supermarkets, and health food stores and comes in different doses. Check the Supplement Facts label for the product you choose to ensure you are getting the appropriate dose. This label also provides information about other ingredients the supplement may contain. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests looking for products with a seal of approval from a third-party organization that provides quality testing, such as U.S. Pharmacopeia, Consumer Lab, or NSF International. A seal of approval from these organizations assures a product was properly manufactured, that it actually includes the ingredients listed on the label, and does not contain harmful levels of contaminants. A seal of approval does not, however, guarantee a products safety or effectiveness. A Word From Verywell If you or someone you know is living with depression, you may be seeking different options to manage your symptoms. While the research on St. Johns wort is promising, its crucial that you work with your healthcare provider and discuss whether its appropriate for you, rather than trying it on your own. Delaying or forgoing treatment for depression can have serious consequences. As you are deciding on treatment, remember to tell each health care provider you work with about all the medications you are taking, including herbal or nutritional supplements, to ensure no potentially dangerous interactions occur. Power and Control in Fanthorpes You Will Be Hearing From...
Power and Control in Fanthorpes You Will Be Hearing From Us Shortly and Dictator Both poems have a sense of someone being controlled by someone who is higher then they are. What I think Fanthorpe is trying to make a point about is that we as humans are shallow, we judge before we actually get to know people properly. We will not change our minds about someone quickly as we base people on our first judgement of them, which is usually wrong. In you will be hearing from us shortly the person is so unimportant to the interviewer that no matter what their answer to a question is, it is always wrong. We as the reader knows that the answer will be wrong so we do not need to see the intervieweesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦He uses positive sarcasm when talking about the interviewees qualifications, though impressive. The person is never going to live up to the high expectations. He talks to the interviewee as if they are in trial in court, defend their relevance. The simple use of indeed shows a disappointed or bad answer to the question. The interviewer, I believe wrongly uses his authority. He makes the person answer the questions wrongly. He uses informal language when talking about the persons age. They want someone who is immature; this is humorous because normally you want someone who is mature. He is suggesting that the person is too old for the job. When he says, we are conscious he is using we for the effect of him being in power. In the fourth verse the interviewer is sarcastic. And now a delicate matter: your looks, to him it obviously is not important; he does not care about hurting the persons feelings. If it were such a delicate matter he would not have mentioned it in the first place. He uses cutting humour, to the point where it would actually hurt someone, you do appreciate this work involves contact with the actual public? Fanthorpe put the word disturbing by itself on the last line of that verse, making it stand out and making it even more hurtful to the interviewee. The interviewer is

Do you remember the old advertisement from the 80ââ¬â¢s, of Smokey Bear who insisted that only YOU could prevent forest fires? Maybe there was more to this than just the obvious. I mean definitely, make sure you put out your fires when camping, and donââ¬â¢t throw a lit cigarette around dry grass, but what if instead of forest fires, Smokey mentioned global warming, mass extinction, or war and poverty? Can you imagine that maybe that could be an accurate statement? Obviously one person isnââ¬â¢t capable of changing these things on such a grand scale, but if YOU actually said humans, then we have the statement ââ¬Å"Only humans can prevent their own destructionâ⬠and suddenly there are a deluge of questions and ideas that might make you think about how you,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Only the Strongestâ⬠¦ Early humans wandered the earth looking for food and shelter. More than just physical changes, mental adaption was crucial to human advancements. As the centuries passed, mental ability and capacity became more apparent. Reflecting to Darwinââ¬â¢s theory of survival, human history is filled with war and strategy. Strong men led strong armies, strong races destroyed weak races, and mental development exploded. Powerful leaders challenged weaker populations and claimed their land and possessions, enslaved their people. Consequently, human development diverged from physical strength and hardiness, and focused on mental improvements. With more power and vast kingdoms, the population began to grow as cities and universities formed. Intelligence became a key to more power, and those who understood had the most to gain. To An Athele Dying Young Essays - To An Athlete Dying Young
To An Athele Dying Young To an Athlete Dying Young by A. E. Housman is a piece about one of the most tragic fates. That fate, of course, is dying at a young age. The first thing that must be determined is who is telling the poem. I believe it is an older man, one who had been a champion of sorts in his younger days. He seems to know and understand what the athlete had felt and what would have become of him. Lines eleven and twelve are good examples that show that the speaker has had some experience with success. The lines read, "And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than a rose." To comprehend this, you must first know what a laurel is. In ancient times, it was a type of decorative wreath made for distinguished and honored people. The athlete never actually had one of these, as the word laurel is only used to convey how proud the townspeople were of the young athlete. Now that we know what a laurel is, we can now understand the full effect of lines eleven and twelve. The speaker is perhaps saying that the glory and praise of being a winner will fade very quickly, as it did with him. Through the speaker's thoughts, you start to get a glimpse of what his life may have been since his youth: his own records broken, his skills diminished, his name forgotten. Instead of being a poem about the death of the athlete, the poem becomes a statement about the life of the speaker. In line eighteen, as one of"the lads who wore their honors out," the speaker seems to be also mourning his own personal demise as a star athlete. Now that we have postulated who the speaker is and all of his thoughts, we can now determine where the poem is occurring. I believe it is taking place at a funeral or some sort of funeral procession. The speaker seems to be observing the deceased athlete, so he must be on display in some manner. Also, the poem is about an athlete in a small town. The entire community is stricken with grief and is mourning the loss together. This is evident in lines five and six: "Today, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home..." Line five shows us that everyone is coming to the funeral, even his competitors and the other runners. Also, the use of "we" is a signal of the entire community gathering to honor the young lad. They were together in celebration of his victory and now are together in mourning his death. The tone of To an Athlete Dying Young is definitely one that many will remember after reading it. The first stanza tells about the past accomplishments and celebrations of the athlete. "The time you won your town the race" shows his success in the past. The tone starts out to be one of pride for the athlete, but soon it changes to a very melancholy and solemn one. The next three stanzas are very depressing and tell of a young man who's "Eyes the shady night has shut." The final stanzas are perhaps the most dreary of all. They look to the future, a future of things undone, a life unlived, and a young man dead too soon. The tone of the story is very poignant and one that cannot easily be shaken from memory. The tone may be a very depressing one, but the theme is even more piercing. The theme of To an Athlete Dying Young is not apparent after one reading. I gave it much thought and have come to one eerie conclusion; the speaker is viewing the premature death in a positive light. To most, that is a terrible or even sinful thing to contemplate, but it is indeed what the speaker is conveying. The theme of this poem is that it is better to die as a young champion than to grow old and be forgotten by all those who surpass your one-time greatness. He calls the dead athlete a "smart lad" for dying as a champion and not remaining in the "fields where glory does not stay." He then compares early death to growing old and being forgotten in the lines "And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears." That is a very powerful statement. The speaker honestly believes that it is just as well to die young

20 Big Fat Lies College Professors Tell Us
20 Big Fat Lies College Professors Tell Us Grab a tub of popcorn, sit back and relax because youââ¬â¢re about to go through the top 20 big fat lies that college professors tell their students in colleges from sea to shining sea. Youââ¬â¢ll be hard pressed to think of any others. This list pretty much covers every base. Enjoy! 1. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t wait until the night before the exam to study and hope to pass it.â⬠Not true. There are many different little details and variables to consider here. Itââ¬â¢s actually quite possible to procrastinate and still get good grades. 2. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll have the tests/exams/homework graded and back to you by the end of the week.â⬠Yeah right. Some professors are pretty good about this, while others arenââ¬â¢t because theyââ¬â¢re so bogged down with classes. Theyââ¬â¢ve got hundreds of tests to grade and papers to inscribe in their ledger. Donââ¬â¢t count on it. 3. ââ¬Å"What youââ¬â¢re learning in this class will prepare you for the real world.â⬠Absolutely not true. Thatââ¬â¢s like saying that working out will prepare a gladiator for battle. Knowledge is helpful, but thereââ¬â¢s a big difference between the classroom and the world off campus. 4. ââ¬Å"If you fail 101, you should probably choose a different major.â⬠Huh? If you have your heart set on a major but bomb 101 that just means you need to try harder. For example, just because a music student struggles with reading and writing music theory doesnââ¬â¢t mean theyââ¬â¢re not gifted musicians. 5. ââ¬Å"I take each one of your papers and read through them thoroughly.â⬠Really? That is almost never true. There simply isnââ¬â¢t enough time. 6. ââ¬Å"I can spot an A-student from a mile off.â⬠Maybe they can and maybe they canââ¬â¢t. Theyââ¬â¢re likely just trying to come off as superior or trying to intimidate students to try and scare off the rabble. A-students are made, not born. 7. ââ¬Å"I do give extensions and I consider exceptions to conventional rules.â⬠If they need to announce this then thereââ¬â¢s probably some strings attached. Extensions typically come with a certain type of price tag. 8. ââ¬Å"This is a fabulous field to focus on, with plentiful employment opportunities.â⬠With only a tiny few exceptions, a college degree in any major doesnââ¬â¢t mean a job at all. Period. Youââ¬â¢re heading into the 21st century online globalized workforce. 9. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not paid enough to be biased.â⬠Everyone is biased, especially a professor. 10. ââ¬Å"I care deeply about your success in this major.â⬠How is it possible for a professor to care about hundreds of incoming and outgoing students year over year? Maybe if you establish a strong relationship with them, otherwise this is a stretch. 11. ââ¬Å"This is by far the very best class Iââ¬â¢ve ever taught.â⬠How clichà ©. Unless youââ¬â¢re in a truly legendary class for some reason then whatââ¬â¢s the point of that statement? 12. ââ¬Å"Oh yes, I always knew I was going to become a college professor.â⬠Could be true, but in most cases itââ¬â¢s not. Remember the old saying, ââ¬Å"Those that canââ¬â¢t do, teach.â⬠13. ââ¬Å"This is the first time Iââ¬â¢ve had to do this butâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Teachers say this to their classes from 1st grade to graduate year Senior Seminar. 14. ââ¬Å"Your final GPA will make a huge impact on the rest of your life.â⬠Not true. The GPA is just a number and has no direct bearing on what you are or are not capable of accomplishing in life. 15. ââ¬Å"I expect the best out of my students.â⬠No, they probably donââ¬â¢t. The longer theyââ¬â¢ve been teachers the less true this statement is likely to be. 16. ââ¬Å"The tests arenââ¬â¢t whatââ¬â¢s most important here.â⬠At the end of the day thatââ¬â¢s simply not true. Take away the need to pass tests and exams, and whatââ¬â¢s left? 17. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t accept excuses.â⬠Maybe not excuses, but there are always extenuating circumstances that all professors must take into account. 18. ââ¬Å"Oh sure, you can stop by my office anytime you need and my doorââ¬â¢s always open.â⬠This is so not true, especially if they teach a common elective course or core required course within a popular major. When theyââ¬â¢re door is open thereââ¬â¢s probably a line and someone already inside. 19. ââ¬Å"If you show up to each lecture, youââ¬â¢ll pass my class.â⬠This isnââ¬â¢t true. Thereââ¬â¢s a fair amount to be said with exposure, listening intently and taking notes but just showing up doesnââ¬â¢t guarantee anything. 20. ââ¬Å"Just be honest, donââ¬â¢t write what you know I want to hear.â⬠Donââ¬â¢t ever fall for this one. Aim to strike a balance between stretching your limits and the limits of the class/instructions, and being honest. What other lies have you heard from your professors? Share in comments!
